Germany: Solidarity with EVG in Their Fight for Fair Wages, Respect, and a Strong Future for Rail

3 Feb 2025

The European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF) has announced its full solidarity with the Eisenbahn- und Verkehrsgewerkschaft (EVG) as rail workers take to the streets of Berlin today to demand fair wages, respect for shift work, and long-term investment in the railway sector.

Rail workers across Europe play a vital role in providing safe and reliable transport for passengers and freight, forming the backbone of sustainable mobility. However, their calls for better pay, improved working conditions, and job security have gone unanswered for too long. The ETF has emphasised that these demands are not only justified but essential to maintaining a well-functioning and sustainable railway sector.

“Railway workers are the lifeblood of Europe’s transport system, yet their dedication and professionalism are often overlooked,” said an ETF spokesperson. “Fair wages and stable working conditions are critical to attracting and retaining skilled workers in the industry. Without them, the future of rail transport is at risk.”

The ETF has also raised concerns over plans to dismantle Europe’s largest rail freight operator, warning that such measures would have devastating consequences for railway workers, the climate, and Europe’s industries. Rail is a cornerstone of the European Green Deal, and any move to weaken the sector would undermine efforts to achieve sustainable mobility and reduce carbon emissions.

The ETF is backing EVG’s call for stronger investment in rail infrastructure and working conditions that reflect the critical role of railway workers. The federation has urged policymakers and employers to prioritise long-term solutions over short-term cost-cutting measures, emphasising that the challenges facing the sector require a collaborative approach.

“Railway workers deserve fair treatment, and their contribution to sustainable mobility must be recognised,” the ETF stated. “We stand united with EVG and all rail unions across Europe in this fight. It is time for policymakers and employers to engage in constructive dialogue with workers and their representatives to ensure fair outcomes for all.”

The ETF’s message is clear: fair wages, respect, and investment in rail are not just demands – they are necessities for a sustainable and prosperous future.
