During its plenary meeting in December, the CCNR adopted a first international definition of levels of automation in inland navigation. This definition help to arrive at a clear understanding of automated navigation as a whole.
This is a fundamental step to have a rational understanding on how the technological innovations affect and will affect the operations in inland navigation. These definitions constitutes a bases for further discussions about legislation, health and safety rules and working conditions.
During the ETF Inland Waterways Section Seminar in St. Petersburg in 2018, these definitions of automation were presented and discussed. They were also integrated in the manning tool developed in the framework of the TASCS project.
