Social dumping, job insecurity, extreme fatigue and mental health challenges are some of the most concerning trends of aircrew work in Europe. Possessing accurate data on these issues is one of the first conditions for ETF’s demands to be seriously considered.
This is why the ETF has been deeply invested in the new Ghent Study v2.0. In 2015, the first edition of this EU-funded study provided groundbreaking insights into the employment conditions of pilots across Europe, standing as an important bargaining tool until today. This time, building on the past success, the University of Ghent is expanding the scope of the study, dedicating equal attention to the challenging reality faced by cabin crew workers.
In collaboration with social partners ECA and ENAA, the ETF has actively contributed to updating the Ghent Study survey, adapting it to the increasing complexity of aircrew employment, the liberalisation of the European aviation market and the emergence of new business models, such as wet-leasing. The resulting survey is now equipped to better capture complex working-hour schemes, intricate contractual ties and mental health struggles of aircrew workers. This is some of the information that will strengthen ETF’s fight for fair and sustainable employment in aviation.
The Genth Study v2.0 survey was launched on 28 October and will remain open until 6 December.
We urge all ETF affiliates, allies, and supporters to promote the survey widely on social media, chatgroups and workplaces. Also consider sharing our distribution posts on Facebook, LinkedIn and X..
