ETF believes that public transport is a public service which must be for the benefit of citizens and communities. In order to ensure public accountability, reinvestment of profits, and democratic oversight, the ETF believes that public transport is better in public hands.
Since many urban public transport (UPT) services have already been privatised or tendered out, this will often require re-municipalisation: putting UPT service back under direct control of local governments. The ETF Urban Public Transport Committee decided that supporting the re-municipalisation of UPT services will be a priority in the coming years.
