On behalf of more than 3.5 million transport workers from 41 European countries and over 230 trade unions, I want to express solidarity with the Turkish population, the Turkish ETF affiliates and all those directly and indirectly affected by the terrorist attacks in Istanbul on Tuesday evening 28 June 2016.
Our first thoughts and deepest sympathy go to the families, friends and colleagues of the travelers and workers who died or got injured by the bombings and shootings at Istanbul Airport.
This attack is yet another attempt to intimidate and terrorize innocent citizens in a city and a country that has been targeted already numerous times in the past months and continues to suffer from barbaric acts of violence by terrorists that solely aim for spreading worldwide fear and division in our societies.
The ETF condemns in the strongest terms any act of terrorism and violence. We call upon all people worldwide, and in particular working men and women and their trade unions, to stand firm against those marginal groups of extremists and not to allow such cruel acts to undermine our belief in humanity and respect for civil rights.
The ETF and its members offer all help and sympathy to those impacted by these dreadful deeds of terrorism.
In solidarity,
Eduardo CHAGAS ETF General Secretary
