We were shocked and saddened to learn of the terrible train accident of April 3, 2020, near the German town of Auggen in which a German locomotive driver lost his life and several other transport workers were injured.
The Swiss freight train was on its way from Germany to Italy when a concrete component of a bridge under construction fell on the track, the train driver did not have time to brake and did not survive when the train derailed. Three people were injured. The freight train was carrying lorries with lorry drivers on board and some of them sustained mild injuries.
On behalf of the European Transport Workers’ Federation, we would like to express our sincere condolences to the families, relatives, friends and colleagues of the victims of this tragic event. Once again, such an accident shows how important it is to fight for the safety of personnel and rail safety on behalf of all transport workers and passengers. We hope that an appropriate and independent accident investigation will provide answers to this tragedy.
We express our solidarity with our German affiliates and all transport workers in this difficult moment.
