As we approach May 1st, the day dedicated to celebrating workers’ rights and achievements, it is crucial to reflect on the current socio-political landscape. In 2025, we find ourselves navigating through challenging times marked by the rise of far-right ideologies, attacks on workers and their unions, and the increasing influence of billionaires in politics.
Whether in national or European politics, we face threats on many sides. On the one hand, Trump’s unprecedented tariffs place millions of European jobs at risk, including in the transport sector. On the other hand, some policymakers and employers have seized the crisis as an opportunity to embark on a crusade for “competitiveness” – a shallow excuse to drive down labour costs by attacking hard-won workers’ rights. But we don’t stand still.
In this context, the role of trade unions has never been more vital. With progressive forces struggling to mount an effective response to these challenges, trade unions stand as a defence of democracy and social rights.
Across Europe, transport trade unions are experiencing growth, a testament to the tireless efforts of our affiliates in recruiting, organising, and securing victories for their members. This surge in union membership also speaks to workers’ recognition of the need for collective organisation. People know that together, they’re stronger than isolated.
Unions are indispensable in the fight for democracy, social rights, and freedom. At the European Transport Workers’ Federation, we take pride in uniting hundreds of unions representing millions of workers who tirelessly advocate for their members, democracy, and freedom.
This May 1st, we extend our heartfelt wishes for a happy Workers’ Day to all transport workers. We reaffirm our commitment to standing together in this struggle across Europe. Whether in negotiations with employers, national governments, or European institutions, we are here to assert that the future is bright only when workers’ fundamental rights are upheld.
Together, we will continue to fight for a fair and just society where workers’ rights are respected and protected. Happy May 1st to all!
